Mubarak Olanipekun
Senior Financial Specialist
Mubarak is a member of the UBC Finance team that supports Extended Learning. He plays an integral role in providing financial support for various UBC ExL units, the English Language Institute and various UBC Faculties. His responsibilities mainly focus on maintaining the financial integrity of the Student Registration system. This encompasses the areas of reconciliations, reporting, and providing financial help desk support and instructions to staff. Mubarak collaborates closely with unit program managers on fiscal planning and reporting. In addition to his current responsibilities Mubarak is always looking for opportunities to grow and excel in his career as a top finance professional at UBC.

Flavia Oliveira
Human Resources Coordinator
She, Her, Hers
As the human resources coordinator for UBC Extended Learning (ExL) Flavia provides advice and recommendations to managers and staff regarding university-wide HR policies and procedures, and ensures departmental compliance with policies and collective agreements. Flavia has a broad range of responsibilities, from providing guidance and facilitation on full-cycle recruitment, salary administration, performance and other staffing activities, to reviewing, analyzing and interpreting various HR policies, systems and procedures.
Flavia is very passionate about continuous learning, professional development and communications. She has numerous certificates in human resources and marketing along with her BA in Public Relations and MBA in People Management.

David Picking
Senior Program Assistant, University Preparation and Community Programs
He, Him, His
David provides administrative and student support for UBC Extended Learning’s (ExL) university preparation and community programs. He helps process admissions, registration and financial transactions for these programs, and liaises with other ExL teams and groups in the community. With more than 20 years of experience as an administrative professional in Canada and the UK, David is passionate about education and ensuring that Canadian and international students have a positive, rewarding experience at UBC.

Josefina Rosado
Senior Learning Designer and Educational Technologist, Academic Services
Josefina supports new Extended Learning (ExL) and Vice-President Academic Office programming initiatives as part of Academic Services Learning Technology, Learning Design, and Media development team. She provides expertise in online learning, learning design and technologies, and media development for new ExL and non-degree UBC Faculty programming, from ideation and instructional design, to production and delivery.
With more than 10 years’ experience in educational technology and online learning, Josefina’s approach to learning design emphasizes accessibility, responsiveness, universal design for learning, and learner engagement.
Josefina sits on the Canvas Catalog Administrators Group and supports the management of the ExL Learning Design & Learning Technology, and ExL DIY Media communities.Details

Joanne Savory
Senior Program Assistant, Community Programs
Joanne is involved with developing and delivering a wide range of arts, humanities and science courses at UBC Extended Learning (ExL). The programs in her portfolio include UBC Elder Scholar, One Day @ UBC and One Week @ UBC. In addition to liaising with UBC faculty to deliver short-term programs, Joanne recruits and orients instructors, supervises student assistants and assists with preparing promotional materials. Joanne brings more than 30 years’ experience in post-secondary client service and program administration to her role.

Dana Schindel
Program Coordinator, UBC Future Global Leaders
She, Her, Hers
Dana leads the development and delivery of all Campus Life components of the UBC Future Global Leaders (FGL) pre-university program. With a background in program design, team management, and educational and recreational programming, Dana brings strategic oversight and operational skills to ensure the success of both staff and students in the program.
In her role, Dana liaises with community partners, UBC Extended Learning, UBC Camps, UBC Student Recruitment, UBC Housing, UBC Dining, and the Future Global Leaders team and participants.
Dana’s own educational experience at UBC amplifies her dedication to creating a dynamic and enriching experience for FGL staff and students to nurture their personal growth and strengthen their global connectivity.

Matthew Schmidt
Program Leader, Language and Writing Programs
Matthew (Matt) is responsible for course and curriculum design and development, and evening weekend and online programming for UBC Extended Learning Languages, Professional Writing and Communications and English Communication Skills courses and programs. He also manages summer institutes in French, Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL), and supervises and mentors more than 50 instructors. Matt is fluent in Spanish and French, and represents ExL at the Centre de la Francophonie de UBC. A published fiction author, Matt’s background includes 12 years’ experience in adult education, a master’s in French literature, a bachelor’s in linguistics and basic skills in ASL.

Aika Sembay
Manager, Program Development, Design & Research, Academic Services
Aika develops and implements UBCx, open learning and non-degree initiatives, including MOOCs (massive open online courses), professional certificates, micro-bachelors and micro-masters. Working in partnership with UBC faculties, she delivers online programming that promotes UBC excellence to the local and international communities.
She conducts market research and needs assessments, and consults stakeholders to design, develop, maintain and evaluate programs to attract new learners. As a member of the Academic Services team, Aika improves learning through online learning management systems and virtual technologies. She also helps administer funding call initiatives, including the Continuous Learning Advancement Fund (CLAF).

Neha Shivhare
Program Leader
She, Her, Hers
Neha is responsible for the planning, design, development, assessment, budgeting and delivery of Extended Learning’s (ExL) programs and courses. She collaborates with ExL teams, UBC Faculties and external education partners to create policies, systems and organizational practices that support the delivery of programs, including data science, cloud computing, extended reality, systematic program design and Indigenous health.
Neha is trained and skilled in policy analysis, research and international education, and has more than a decade of experience developing educational programs and leading teams. A passionate scholar and teacher-educator, she’s committed to advancing flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices that are accessible to adult learners. Neha enjoys research-based problem solving and policy planning to streamline operational processes.

Patricia St. Laurent
Manager, Program Marketing
She, Her, Hers
Patricia plans, implements and evaluates integrated marketing campaigns for UBC Extended Learning University Preparation, Graduate Studies Preparation and Community Programs. She also collaborates with the UBC Faculty of Medicine and Peter A. Allard School of Law, as well as Blockchain@UBC, to deliver professional development programs. Patricia contributes to strategic planning, creates communications plans, assesses campaign performance, and applies insights from analytics to future marketing cycles.
Her long and varied career includes management positions in the financial, telecom, government, not-for-profit, retail and education sectors, and at advertising agencies. She has mentored for the Women in Leadership Foundation, has won several awards for her work in university continuing education, and has presented at higher education industry conferences.
